Market environment

The global cancer market was around US$34 billion in 2006 and is predicted to grow to over US$45 billion by 2011. (1)

This is a huge market because cancer affects everyone! For the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world.

In 2005, 7.6 million people died of cancer out of 58 million deaths worldwide and according to projections, cancer deaths will continue to rise to an estimated 9 million people in 2015 and 11.4 million dying in 2030.(2)

In Canada, 159,900 new cases and 72,700 deaths from cancer occurred in 2007. One in four Canadians dies from cancer every year and the disease is responsible for over 1 million potential years of life lost in the country!

Lung cancer is the most frequent and the number one killer among cancers. Breast (women), prostate (men) and colorectal cancers have also high incidences and mortality rates in the population.

35% of the therapeutic products currently in various stage of development in Canada are for the treatment of cancer. Two thirds of those are still in research or pre-clinical phases.

With 41,000 new cases in 2007, the province of Quebec has incidence rates slightly above the national average. Cancer has long been a high priority research focus in the province and major programs were implemented to support research in this area.
