Created in 1995 to promote clinical trials research within the establishments of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) provides an infrastructure which assures services to its investigators and a single point of entry to sponsors and CROs for clinical trials proposals.

With over 400 clinical investigators, the Research Institute of the MUHC has become one of Canada's largest clinical research centres executing studies in all four phases of clinical trials in virtually all therapeutic areas.

In addition to the execution of clinical trials, the CRC can also offer specialized pre-clinical and clinical trial design as well as laboratory services.

The CRC has constructed its own standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure GCP in compliance with FDA, HPB and ICH guidelines.

These efforts and the excellence of its services were rewarded through a co-marketing agreement with PAREXEL International, one of the major CROs in the world.

Clinical research has been one the CHUM Research Centre’s main activities since its creation in 1996. Currently, the CHUM Research Centre runs over 850 studies in major therapeutic areas. The majority of them are sponsored by the industry and the other portion is equally divided between agency-funded projects and original projects by CHUM members.

The 150 clinical investigators of the Research Center are physicians who practice in the three major hospitals affiliated to the University of Montreal: St Luc, Notre Dame and Hotel Dieu. Their therapeutic specialities include oncology, CNS diseases, CVD, metabolic syndrome, musculoskeletal, auto-immune and hepatic diseases.

Clinicians are assisted by a contract office, three ethic committees and an administrative support team that allow to initiate about 25 new studies each month.

With its 153 beds, 200 clinicians, 4 operating rooms, 4 hemodynamic rooms, 75 researchers specializing in clinical, basic and applied research, one angioradiology room, one magnetic resonance imaging room dedicated to cardiovascular patients and with a long-standing reputation of excellence in cardiac care, the Montreal Heart Institute is an ultra-specialized hospital centre that has been on the forefront of cardiac research and patient care for more than 50 years.

Its Coordinating Centre is an academic research organization that provides clinical research services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as to agency-sponsored trials.

Its expertise covers a full range of services related to Phase II to IV clinical trials including clinical development plan design, protocol development, project management, site management, biostatistics, data management, clinical monitoring, medical oversight, safety surveillance, medical writing, etc.

In addition, the MHICC hosts fully integrated core laboratories for: electrocardiogram (ECG), intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), quantitative Coronary Angiography (QCA), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and brachial ultrasound.

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and compliance to ICH/Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards and to CFR Part 11 ensure high quality studies and its access to a large base of patients guaranties fast enrolment timesThe findings of Dr. Tardif's team have led to the creation of new pharmacological approaches and new technologies which are currently being studied in large clinical trials.

The institute for clinical research of Montreal (IRCM) is a top Canadian research centre in the field of genomics and molecular biology. Its renowned scientists have contributed to new discoveries in cardiovascular, neurology, endocrinology, and in the application of molecular therapy to cancer and immunology, to name just a few areas.

Its clinic handles over 20,000 outpatient visits a year. Its primary mandate is the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Patients are seen by physicians who specialize in problems related to cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Clinical research protocols are regularly developed for the testing of new therapeutic approaches.

More than 20 physicians currently work at the clinic and in the Montréal University hospital network.

The clinic is funded directly by the IRCM and through funding from private sources, such as the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Did you know? Canada hosts the highest concentration of contractual research organization (CRO) per capita in the world!
