With its 11 institutions of higher learning, including four major universities (two French language and two of English language), several colleges and many private and public schools, the Montreal metropolitan area is a fantastic reservoir of highly skilled human resources.
Montreal has 165,900 students and the largest number of foreign students in Canada (17,000). More than 41,000 students earned a university degree in 2005 and close to 40% of the total population earns a college or university degree.
Montréal ranks first in North America for the number of university students per capita, ahead of Denver and Boston.
More than half of the population of Metro Montreal is bilingual (French and English) and nearly 10,200 students are currently enrolled in a program related to life sciences. Over 2,000 university degrees are awarded each year in life sciences.
Scientists and managers
The life sciences industry employs over 40,500 highly skilled people including 11,750 research specialists in 149 public research organizations.
With 479 private companies, the Metro Montreal life sciences industry offers a reservoir of trained and skilled professionals and managers.
